OVERVIEW

My Team Emerged as the Champions of the Build With Google Hackathon!

We were tasked by 66Degrees, BeMyApp, and Google to make a healthcare-related app with Appsheets. During this hackathon, Google experts provided guidance and advice throughout the phases of building our application. Winning this hackathon is a testament to the incredible teamwork we cultivated. I had the privilege of working alongside the brilliant minds of Ali Hashim, Jordy Mopewou, and Jennifer Trejo. Our hard work, innovation, and collaborative spirit paid off!

PROBLEM

Organizations Face Difficulties in Ensuring Employees' Adherence to Mandatory Vaccinations and Health Check-ups for International Travel

We talked about the pain points several companies and individuals people face when they go on business trips to different countries. Navigating the extensive and time-consuming list of medical requirements can be daunting, posing potential health risks and causing delays in project timelines.

GOALS

Notify

  • Prepare and notify employees about required vaccines and check-ups for international travel

Live Updates

  • Allows seamless status updates for international travel

TARGET AUDIENCE

We Focused on Large Corporations that Did Business Travel.

Identifying our users promptly was crucial for understanding the user flow. We recognized our audience was busy people, so we knew we needed a simple, user-friendly workflow that did not disrupt their workloads.

Then, we concentrated on the information architecture to develop our navigation system and user flows. We aimed to streamline the process of addressing user goals and pain points.

IDEATION AND PROBLEM-SOLVING

As in many projects, there can be miscommunications or things that slip through the cracks. I took rough sketching time to draft out a clear user flow, needs, and pain points that the whole team could refer to. Towards the beginning of the project, there were some uncertainties about who the primary user would be. I made sure to clarify and work with my team as much as possible to make sure everyone was on the same page.

RESULTS

We Created a User-friendly Business Travel App That Got Us First Place!

Winning first place was undoubtedly an incredible achievement, but what's even more valuable is the friendships and memories we created during this journey. I also loved seeing all the other groups’ stunning projects as well. I couldn't be prouder of this amazing team and the incredible teamwork that brought us to the top.

Honestly, I did not even want to participate at first because I was so nervous since I knew there would be many people much older and more experienced than me. However, signing up for this hackathon was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It gave me that boost in confidence I needed. I know I can achieve great things, I just need the right opportunities.

WHAT ALLOWED US TO WIN

1.) Intense ideation process: we wanted an idea that hit all of the main judging criteria

Technical execution- due to our learning curve with App Sheets and our 24-hour time frame, we knew we had to pull our focus onto one main problem and make that as well executed and fully functioning as possible.

Innovation- We wanted to come up with an app idea that we personally have never heard of before.

Impact/Business Potential- We wanted an app to be scalable and for the success to be easily measured in order for businesses to see the impact.

2.) Delegation of tasks: In order to finish on time, we split our team into two. Jenny and I focused on the UX/branding side of things thanks to our education in the subject. I wanted to make sure this app had clearly defined pain points, goals, and user flow. Ali and Jordy focused on the development and data structure (they totally killed it).

3.) Of course, hard work and determination: After the first workday was over, our dedication to our app never ended. We worked tirelessly through the night crafting our vision, and it paid off!

REFLECTION

What I Learned

This was my first ever hackathon! Here are some things that I learned:

1.) Design thinking is so powerful: I got to speak with some BeMyApp employees, and one of the employees mentioned that UX designers are always the most powerful contenders. You have extremely talented developers working on the project, but it does not mean it is user-friendly (it usually isn’t).

2.) Clear communication is a must: Towards the beginning of the project, there were some uncertainties about who the primary user would be. This led to different people designing and developing the app in two different directions. It is crucial to spot this early on and make sure everyone is on the same page before moving on.

3.) Recognizing strengths and weaknesses: We split our team into two based on previous experiences and strengths. This allowed us to be ahead of many teams and thoroughly love what we were doing.
